History
The initial plan for the Moama Sports Club site was for a huge sporting complex including archery, netball, tennis, football and Olympic standard Velodrome.
There were two parties interested in building on the site, RRGC and the Moama RSL. RRGC was able to purchase the land adjoining the sporting area and began planning their complex.
The original two storey complex housed sporting club rooms, meeting and first aid spaces. Upstairs a large open plan layout was constructed that housed a central bar, bistro dining area and TAB/Gaming lounge with 60 machines.
The complex opened on Sunday 14th December 1990, just two days prior to the Moama RSL complex which had been build 5km further down Perricootta Road. The day the Sporties opened it was surrounded by a single green mound of grass, black carpark and dirt as far as the eye could see. The Eddy Oval did not exist and the Velodrome stood out like a sore thumb. The only other facilities built at that time were the Football Ground and Moama Football Club Pavillion - that was it.
Eddy Oval was built in 2002. Brick alley (now the soccer ground) built in 1994/95 - nicknamed 'Brick Alley' because it was a cricket pitch in the middle of a very rough paddock. It was a bit like playing on a field with broken bricks on it. The first few years the sporting site was used for the 'Boxing Day Sports' which consisted of: bike races and athletics.
The Sporties had 42 staff employed for the opening day. 6000+ people came to inspect the new premises whilst being entertained by the Seekers.
Initial main staff were:
Ron Stockdale - Manager
George Siderow - Ass. Manager/ Poker machine manager
June Jenkins - Reception
Toby Teasdale - Head Steward
Had own cleaning staff
Chefs were rotated between RRGC and MSC.
First 12 months of operations exceeded all expectations and the club was able to pay off some of the interest and some of the principal which was unheard of. This was mainly due to the onset of accepting bus bookings and the popularity with the locals.
Jim Swinnerton was appointed our 2nd manager when Ron Stockdale was appointed as the RSL manager.
There were plans drawn up in the first two years of operations which altered the first floor from pokies and dining lounge to a conference centre. The ground floor would then house the pokie machines, bistro and admin offices. The football club was also to have new change rooms built. This plan was never implemented.
In March 2007 the Sporties altered its facilities to accommodate for the anti-smoking legislation. The floor plan was doubled and incorporated an al-fresco balcony, which took in all the views of the sporting area. The ground floor was renovated and opened as a gym complex. The complex included a variety of exercise classes - circuit, spin, stretch and free weights. Access to the first floor had always been an issue and this was relieved by the installation of a lift in August 2007.
